Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Every story builds a world. Great literature, theater and cinema have done it. To these possible worlds today are added those created by the TV series, a particular genre of television storytelling that, in over fifty years of history, has touched degrees of maturity and refinement that make it a leading aesthetic and cultural object. If once the imaginary was fed by novels and films, today the TV show is capable of drawing environments, of evoking objects, of bringing to life characters that come out of the confines of the small screen to become real in our discourses, in our tastes, in our daily life. The glamorous New York Sex and the City or the vintage Mad Men, the America lying on the secrets and lies of the suburbia of Desperate Housewives, the mysterious island of Lost and the hospital rooms of Dr. House ... This volume is a compelling journey into the material and imaginary universes of contemporary TV series: along the way, the reader will be able to explore the "world-building" mechanisms of American serialism, eventually understanding more about the undeniable charm of this specifically television art form.
