Abstract

The relationship between Universities and ecclesiastical Archives is conditioned by the future prospects of medieval studies, called to overcome every form of moralism. The studies on the interactions between ecclesiastical, municipal and noble institutions are very promising in the perspective of a new consideration of the city as an open political space, that can also be contested by ecclesiastical subjects. On an operational level, academic historiography is called to strengthen the link with ecclesiastical Archives through initiatives aimed at enhancing the documentation not only on a purely material level, but above all on a cultural one.
