Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The century between the pontificates of Leo XIII and Paul VI was marked by three enormous events in the history of Italian Catholicism, which had strong repercussions also in the literary field: the modernist crisis, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Pacts Laterans, in 1929, and the Vatican II Ecumenical Council, in the first half of the sixties. Around these crucial junctions the essay traces a century of Catholic literature, offering a dense but complete panorama of the contribution given by Catholic writers to the national literature and to the restless conscience of the twentieth century, amid reformist impulses, references to order and a renewed confrontation with the evergreen message of the Gospels.
