Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Almost two thousand five hundred years ago, Aristotle started the discussion on the different aspects of the organization of the polis by defining the human being as a "political animal", the only living being capable of giving shape to political communities. Since then, ancient, modern and contemporary thinkers have followed one another in giving their own definition of what politics is, each of which is derived from the particular events and ideas that this term is associated with in different historical moments: from the polis to the Empire , from the State to its crisis in globalization, up to the birth of International Relations. Crossing more than two millennia of reflections, we come to recognize how the Aristotelian expression still retains its value and leads us to identify in politics not only a "means" or a particular type of power with perennial laws, but above all the specific form of social relations with which human beings organize and experience associated life, oscillating between obedience to established authority and the search for spaces of freedom.
