Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The poet's judgment on the theatrical events of his era is derived from the reading of some passages in Juvenal's satires: he condemns the performances because they no longer transmit any edifying value, but are reduced to trivial performances that arouse morbid desires in the spectators or become stage for disqualifying performances by nobles reduced to caricature of themselves. The basic problem lies in the total lack of a patronage that takes theatrical authors away from the need to compose low-level works, but of immediate success that allow them a dignified survival.
