Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] What do a Piedmontese bersagliere and a Sicilian picciotto have in common? Is Italy merely a geographical expression or can we attribute to the Italians, with some foundation, a national identity? And in any case: why at the Italian Risorgimento did you want to give a unified solution? Wasn't freedom and independence enough? And why was Rome capital demanded at all costs? The answers to these questions were fished directly in the writings of the literates, Manzoni in the lead, who accompanied the Risorgimento process by fixing the table of values, without disdaining, if necessary, to take a leading role on the stage of history, as fathers of the homeland or martyrs of his redemption. The volume embraces a period of time ranging from Foscolo dell '"Ortis" (1802) to De Amicis of "Cuore" (1886). It is divided into two sections, respectively "Manzoni's Civil Rope" and "Identity Cards". Authors are reviewed (in particular, in addition to the aforementioned: Alfieri, Lomonaco, Ravina, Pellico, Bazzoni, Guerrazzi, D'Azeglio, Tommaseo, Cantù, Rovani, Nievo and Abba) and literary genres (in particular the patriotic lyric, the tragedy historical, historical fiction and memorialism).
