[Autom. eng. transl.] In order to verify the state of evolution of the Administration, Finance and Control Function and the role of the CFO, this research was conducted. To justify the study in question there are at least two reasons: the first, to point out the marked differences in the environmental and business context compared to what IBM has documented in the periodic CFO Global Survey as well as from other academic studies, and the second, the lack of contemporaneity in Italy of research on the subject. Through the analysis of nine cases of large Italian companies, we wanted to document how the AFC function and the CFO have carved out a role in value creation processes, leveraging the typical functions of the function: creating rules and a common language, support for decision-making and independent compliance. From the analysis of the cases the evolutionary drivers of the function also emerge: the finance efficiency (ie the ability to collect and provide information efficiently) and the business insight (or the ability to read the business and support the development of strategies). The roles, which the different AFC functions and the different CFOs have carved out, are differentiated from each other, but from the results of the research it can be guessed that a lot of the AFC function and the CFO can do to accompany companies in a continuous path of economic growth.
