Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay analyzes the attitude assumed by European intellectuals during the First World War, in particular in two figures of intellectuals as a knight between Germany and Italy: Rudolf Borchardt, German poet and philologist, author of a singular translation of the Divine Comedy in medium-German, and Tommaso Gallarati Scotti, Milanese intellectual and writer, scholar of medieval mystics and Dante and exponent of liberal Catholicism of Manzonian tradition. How their friendship was born at the beginning of the twentieth century in the field of common Dantesque interests, what was the different experience of war gained from common participation as volunteers on the opposing fronts of the conflict, what outcome the war had on their friendship, on their political thought and on the concrete choices of the second post-war period, it is the object of the analysis of the present essay.
