Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Published for the first time in 1931, this text is the most important and representative work of Amato Masnovo: a treatise on metaphysics understood as the very heart of philosophy, which arises from the problem of life and must be able to return to it. It is the need for a rational questioning about oneself and the world, which cannot avoid extending itself to the ultimate questions, that is, asking oneself whether a meaning exists or not and, if so, what or perhaps who it is; in this trajectory philosophy intersects religion and it will only be possible to see if a clash or a meeting will take place between the two. In a context that is in many respects distant from ours, but no less sophisticated and composite, the author believes he can decline the embrace between the dimension of reason and that of faith in a volume that today can be considered a classic, capable of represent both his own time and problems and solutions that transcend it. The edition presented here is revised and integrated in the notes, and includes in the appendix the four articles referred to by Masnovo himself in the essay.
