Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] More and more numerous, but also better at school. They are students with non-Italian citizenship who attended Italian schools in the 2012/2013 school year according to the photograph taken by the ISMU-MIUR Report. The ministerial statistics show that pupils with non-Italian citizenship continue to grow in number and also in percentage: they are 76,8.630, 8.8% of the total number of students enrolled in Italian schools. In the previous school year they were 8.4%. The great boom in attendance, however, seems to have come to a halt: the average annual increase was 60/70 thousand from 2002/2003 to 2007/2008, while it was more reduced and unstable in the following years. However, second-generation students are increasingly more: 47.2% of foreign students were born in Italy. Percentage that rises to 80% in nursery schools and 60% in the primary. Pupils with non-Italian citizenship are present above all in the northern and central regions, concentrated in particular in the medium and small-sized provinces. As for the nationality, the long-standing record of Romanian pupils is confirmed (148.602), followed by the Albanians (104.710) and the Moroccans (98.106). And, if we look at the genus, the females are almost equal to the companions of Italian origin. In high schools the students of immigrant origin even outnumber the Italian ones. In the North East in particular, 50.4% are compared to 49.1%. But it is above all in the scholastic results that students with non-Italian citizenship gain ground. And this while remaining, according to the report of the MIUR, in levels of "scholastic delay still significant". Integration is becoming a reality, and the school is at the same time the litmus test and the engine. The delay almost disappears for the students with different citizenships who were born in our country: their performances are close to those of the Italians (especially in the foreign language tests), better than those of their foreign-born companions.
