Abstract
Game-based learning (GBL) benefits from a large body of evidence highlighting its formative value; however, it is seldom used in formal instructional environments, due both to contingent issues, such as the lack of teacher training, but also to an intrinsic problem: the difficulty in reconciling learning objectives and game experience. This
contribution proposes an innovative model for the alignment of specific learning objectives and the play experience, through the concept of game
scenarios and the introduction of SMART game objectives. This model cuts across analogue and digital game types and represents the first step towards a universal design model for GBL.
