Abstract

The recent proliferation of events is based on a complex interaction and a complex evolution of three different cultural systems existing in the West. The first is represented by the archaic world (magic and religious), of which we analyze the winter festivities, New Year and Carnival. The second refers to the Christian calendar, in which Easter and Corpus Christi are the most representative celebrations. The contemporary secular rituals, in which the performing arts play a vital role, stem from the Renaissance and Baroque celebrations of civil and religious power.
