Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Age management matures in fields that, according to their own premises, postulate a distancing between themselves, as are occupational medicine with its attention to the individual and organizational dimensions linked to the contents of work performance, on the one hand, and the social gerontology with its attention to the influences exerted on the biographies of workers and organizations by structural factors of an institutional nature, on the other hand. Also for these reasons age management seems to be still far from taking root and taking full citizenship within the organizational and managerial sciences. However, this duplicity of origin represents not a point of weakness but a strength of this nascent discipline. Against the background of the development of age management remains the scenario of the profound changes that the demographic dynamics will determine during the present century in our country, in Europe and in the rest of the world. All these issues are the backbone of the manual. Age, in its multiple meanings, together with the aging process, are topics discussed in their implications on the macro-structural, meso-organizational and micro-individual side within the first chapter, a contribution that aims to give account also of the most recent acquisitions on aging processes matured in the scientific field. The institutional response to the challenges posed by demographic change is the topic contained in the second chapter. For more than thirty years international organizations, supranational institutions and individual national bodies have developed at various levels an impressive amount of measures, recommendations, policies and action programs to face the challenges of demographic change that cannot fail to represent the framework of the main factors of conditioning, to the different plans (regulatory, organizational and individual), of the possibility of intervention in work organizations through age management practices. The third chapter presents and discusses the definitions of age management as well as the analytical and intervention perspectives that have emerged from them. It is here in particular that evidence is given of the different approaches that derive from the duplicity of origin of the age management itself. These observations are organically inserted in the reflections related to organizational change and theories on diversity management at work. Finally, in the fourth chapter, what is a substantial roundup of practices and tools - defined in very different contexts - in the field of age management, to be interpreted as examples of possible intervention strategies within work organizations is carried out. This review represents a first systematic attempt to organize the levers used by private and public companies and institutions - referring to concrete application experiences - that have dealt with the challenge of age management and have defined strategies and lines of action consistent with this target. Despite its inevitable partiality, as exemplified in the fourth chapter refers to methodologies and instruments that enjoy a certain reputation and diffusion at European level and that, above all, have proved to be among the most effective in intervening on the various dimensions of factor management age and in achieving the expected results.
