Addressing motivation in globesity treatment: a new challenge for clinical psychology

Abstract

The global epidemic of obesity and being\r\noverweight (Globesity) is rapidly becoming\r\na major public health problem in many\r\nparts of the world, since it is often associated\r\nwith many related chronic diseases\r\n(Wadden et al., 2002) including diabetes\r\nmellitus, cardiovascular disease, hypertension,\r\nkidney failure, osteoarthritis as well\r\nas psychological problems such as depression,\r\nfeelings of shame, low self-esteem,\r\nand stigma (Byrne et al., 2004; Riva et al.,\r\n2006a; Manzoni et al., 2008; Villa et al.,\r\n2009; Capodaglio et al., 2010). Obesity and\r\nbeing overweight are also frequently connected\r\nwith Binge Eating Disorder (BED),\r\na psychopathological disorder characterized\r\nby frequent and persistent episodes of binge\r\neating characterized by loss of control over\r\neating within a discrete period of time, and\r\nsignificant distress.
