For them, work is play, entertainment, fun, passion but also risk, danger, sacrifice. Suspended on a thread, the web acrobats stage their show, in front of an enthusiastic audience. Sometimes, however, it can happen to make a false step, to slip and fall into the void. In 2000 the financial bubble of the new economy broke out, dragging companies and workers in the sector into its fall. The meshes of the Net, the one with the capital letter, that is the Internet, did not hold: the nodes that supported the structure melted and the acrobats fell into the net, the one with the lower case letter, that is a social protection system with large meshes , unable to support the new professional figures. This volume tells the story of work in the internet sector starting from the effervescence of his birth, up to the disappointment caused by the crisis. The Internet presents, in an accentuated form, all the elements that characterize the new economy: the immateriality of the product, scientific and technological innovation, a network structure both in terms of process and product, centrality of information, work reflexivity, etc. But what is the new economy? What are the factors that marked the transition from an old economy to a "new" economy? To the new society, the information society, and to the new economy, that of the network, corresponds a new job? What are the main subjective consequences in the relationship between people and work? The volume addresses these issues from an original point of view. The literature that has so far dealt with these issues is mainly economic and financial, and is interested in the stories of internet protagonists, of those who invented new technologies; this book, instead, through the categories of the sociology of work, analyzes the stories of the people who produce the internet through their daily work.
