Abstract
The attempt to sketch a social history of Italian grammaticography on the basis of the sociocultural origin of grammarians leads to the identification of some features that characterize different periods: a link with the courts or practicing law in the sixteenth century, being a cleric and involved in education in the seventeenth and eighteenth century, working as a teacher (as in the previous period) and as an editor in the nineteenth century, as a university professor in the twentieth century.
