Abstract

bETWEEN 1911 AND THE cHINESE rEVOLUTION OF 1949, THE cATHOLIC Church IN cHINA FACED DEEP CHANGES. tHERE WAS AN INTERNAL FIGHT IN THE CHURCH BETWEEN THE RELIGIOUS MISSION AND POLITICAL INTERESTS. THE CASE OF THE SHANGHAI CHURCH IS HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT TO ANALYZE THE FIGURES OF CHINESE CATHOLICS, LAYMEN AND MEMBERS OF THE CLERGY, WHO NOT ONLY WERE AUTHOTITATIVE IN THE INTERNAL QUESTIONS OF THE CHURCH BUT ALSO HAD SOME IMPORTANCE IN THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL LIFE IN THE cHINA OF THEIR TIME.
