Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The paper presents testimonies on community reading in Italy in the modern and contemporary age, collected through interviews with the protagonists realized in the provinces of Brescia, Mantua and Verona. The phenomenon of community reading is analyzed in order to establish the diffusion of the passive competence of the national idiom in the Italy of the first half of the twentieth century.
