Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Within the onomastic formula used in the invocation of divinity, the epiclesis is the determining element: the one that identifies, among the many titles of a god πολυώνυμος, one of the numerous aspects in which the divine is 'atomized'. The uniformity of the Panhellenic religious imagination is multiplied in the richness of local peculiarities. The colonies of Magna Graecia are no exception: the study of the epiclesis of the region reveals original and distinctive characters, which broaden and partly modify the overall picture known so far. In the analysis of these cult titles, the tools offered by Greek linguistics - suitably supported by philological and literary observations - provide a fundamental key to access the reconstruction of those characteristic traits of the divinities that are hidden, more or less veiled, in the their names. The volume arrives at results that transcend the mere onomastic field, offering several innovative contributions also on the front of philology and religion, as well as literary exegesis and the study of the Greek lexicon.
