Abstract

After a short introduction concerning the form/function interplay in the inflection system of German, the case morphology is considered, with particular attention to three changing tendencies: 1) the nouns loose their segmental morphs (especially in the Genitive Singular) and the definite article is given the function of case marker; 2) a case is substituted for another case and 3) a concurrent construction is substituted for a case (e.g. "von + Dative" as substitute for the Genitive). These changes serve also to reduce redundance and to improve the analytic design of the grammatical system.
